WHERE DOES A RAINDROP COME FROM?

By Anu Kasumu

If only I could trace its lineage

In an elegant meander

The same way it traverses my windowpane

Since the beginning of time

That water has been here, there

Everywhere, everyone

What oceans, rivers, bodies has it passed through?

What dams, what storms, what tears?

What stories could it tell?

Flowing through states of matter like a dance

Entranced, I soak my eyes and feet in the downpour

Smashing the ancestral looking glass I bathe my boots in all that came before

And it sounds like home Is that all we were meant to be?

A commune of puddles

Pouring into one another as we are filled to the brim

Overflow upon overflow

Forgetting overwhelm

Where does my water end and yours begin?

I do not know

But I choose to drown

Together

"This piece was a brain dump I wrote on the bus while it was raining. I was hypnotized by the raindrops dancing down the window, joining together and flowing apart freely. In that moment, I was envious of them. So I decided to use that feeling as some writing fuel. Hope you enjoy!"
