"My grandmother told me about a family tradition she had growing up: making dumplings right before Chinese New Year because they resemble money pouches, which symbolizes good fortune for the coming year. My project reimagines the dumplings, filling them with valuables such as jewelry and gems, instead of the typical fillings. Fortune cookies are also strongly linked with Chinese culture but interestingly, do not originate from China. It’s their mysterious mixed background and irreverent nature that I find relatable. My work celebrates my heritage and reflects on cultural symbols of food and prosperity, from a Western perspective."
